# Personal

> Work directly on a Parable’s main ref, then enable versioning and participation when ready.

## Sources

Docs: [Collaboration and Participation Modes](/ponder/parables/permissions/collaboration-modes), [Personal vs. Published](/ponder/parables/purposes/personal-vs-published)

Web App: Open **Collaboration** on a new composed Parable to see **Publish & Ping**.

## Story

**Personal** is the default Collaboration Mode of a composed Parable. Edits save
directly to its main ref. There is no Changes set to select or Version to publish
as part of an ordinary Personal edit.

Saved Page and Pane code is compiled and cached when opened. Reopening unchanged
content reuses that build; publishing is not required to keep a build available.

## Structure

The Collaboration tab offers **Stay Personal** or **Enable Publishing & Pinging**.
Enabling changes the saved mode to **Published Versions** and opens your first set of
Changes. It enables versioning without immediately publishing or sending a Ping.

In Personal mode, Ponder hides the participation dropdown and the Push, Version,
State, and Changes controls. Presence remains to the left of Problem. The Report
cascader still selects Current data or a stored Report; reading data does not enable publishing.

## Storage

The Person who holds Primary can use **Disable Publishing** in Publishing options
to return to Personal. If a Role or Workspace holds Primary, transfer it to a Person
first; that Person must perform the change.
Main content, saved Versions, and existing Workspace copies are retained. Active
Changes are pocketed and the other participants are removed. Future Personal edits
write to main even when earlier Versions exist.

If work appears missing after disabling, re-enable publishing and inspect Pocketed
Changes. Disabling never promotes pending work over the current main content.
