Docs: Pondering Web App: Open Pings from Ponder or use the supported Ping action on the current Problem. Pinging is the third of the four participations on a Parable: Primary, Publishing, Pinging, and Peeking. A person who holds Pinging may:
  • see the Parable and read every set of Changes that is not pocketed; and
  • open the Problems tab and work in Problems.
A person who holds Pinging may not edit Pieces. They may not start, propose, prepare, publish, pocket, restore, or delete a set of Changes. They may not run a Refresh: they read the Plot and its run History, and they ask a person who holds Publishing or Primary. They may not give a participation to anyone. A Ping directs the attention of a person to a Problem when you need an answer, a review, or a choice. A question Ping asks one or more questions, and each question can offer choices with their pros and cons. A news Ping asks for no response. A mention Ping tells a person that a Message mentions them. Each Ping is a row of the Pings Platform Parable, which Parable staff deploy to every Workspace. So the participation on the Pings Parable decides who sends and answers a Ping, not the participation on the Parable that the Ping is about. To read a Ping needs Peeking on the Pings Parable. To send a Ping or answer one needs Pinging on it. Every member of the Workspace holds Pinging on the Pings Parable while Visible is on for it. A Ping shows only to the person who sent it and the people it names, and only the people it names answer it (Pings).

Send a useful Ping

  1. Name the decision or information you need.
  2. Choose the intended person rather than a broad audience.
  3. Include only the minimum context they are allowed to receive.
  4. State when a response is needed and how it will affect the Problem.
  5. Keep later discussion in an authorized Problem Message when appropriate.
A Ping creates attention, not authority. It does not grant membership, reveal the source Problem, give a participation on the Parable, or widen the audience. When the recipient cannot open the source context, use the ordinary Workspace access flow or provide a safe summary; do not paste restricted content into the Ping.

Track the response

Each person that a Ping names answers with their own answer row. Only that person changes the answer, and only the sender closes the Ping. A person whom the Ping does not name cannot answer it. If a long discussion is necessary, bring the authorized people into the Problem. Do not make the Ping a second conversation.

Choose Pinging mode when clarifying

Pinging mode narrows the Parable surface to the reading and collaboration tools used for clarification. It is a statement of current activity, not a participation: the participation the person already holds still decides which modes and actions are available. A person who holds Primary or Publishing can choose Pinging mode. A person who holds Pinging can choose Pinging or Peeking mode.
