Docs: Preferences and Policies Web App: A Pane’s controls save a value for you (Me) or, when the Pane offers it, for a team or for This Parable.

Story

Every saved value is a row of its Pane’s type, and every row belongs to one actor. The product names each actor the same way wherever one is shown or chosen: A shared row is held per Parable: each Workspace’s copy of a Parable has its own This Parable rows, so the actor reads This Parable, not Workspace. A team is one the Parable’s own data describes, such as a Division, a Department or a Team in Team Time Spend; the levels and their names come from the Parable’s content. The Default rows belong to the Parable: the people who hold Primary on the line that publishes it write them on purpose, they never name people, Roles, teams or Workspaces, and every copy of the Parable gets them with each Release. A Pane’s code can also hold a default for fields that no row sets. A team holds no seat, and no grant names it. An agent acting for you saves rows as you.

Choose between them

A row holds only the fields its actor sets, and a read merges the rows field by field, narrowest first: your own row, then a team’s when the read names the team, then This Parable’s, then the Default, then the Pane’s code default. A row can also hide an item that a wider layer holds. Removing your own row shows the next layer. A Pane labels each choice with its actor, such as Hide for Me and Hide for This Parable. Every row is Live: it takes effect at once and keeps its full history. It is not part of a Version: publishing does not copy, reset, or roll it back. The Default rows travel with each Release to the Parable’s copies.

Who may write where

  • Your own row (Me): you, from a Pane that offers a control for it. Nobody else can read or change it. The Pane’s current view.preferences Policy must allow you, because that grant is the floor to use the Pane. Your own row needs no create.preferences, edit.preferences, or delete.preferences. When the Pane’s Policies do not allow you to see its rows, a read of your own row finds nothing, and a save or a delete is refused with the same PA-AU-019 that refuses a shared write.
  • A row for a team or This Parable: create.preferences permits its first save, edit.preferences permits replacing it, and delete.preferences permits deleting it, and the Pane’s edit filters may narrow each. The Pane’s current Policies on the line decide each action; an older Version’s Policies do not grant access.
  • A Default row: only Primary on the line that owns the Parable. The Pane’s current create.data, edit.data, or delete.data Policy must also allow that action, because a Default row is the Parable’s own value for every reader, like the Pane’s data. On a Platform Parable, a Workspace writes Me, team and This Parable rows only.
  • A row that a Policy reads: also needs permission to edit those Policies, and a save from a Pane’s code asks you to confirm it.
A row’s history shows who saved each value and when.
